The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) is proud to announce that University of Alberta Augustana student-athlete Erin Howes has been selected as a recipient of the 2025-26 CCAA Torchbearer Scholarship, presented by FieldTurf. A Psychology and Mental Health student and member of the Augustana Vikings women’s basketball team, Howes has demonstrated outstanding leadership, initiative, and a commitment to empowering the next generation of female athletes.
“I wanted to create a space where young girls could grow not only as athletes, but as people,” said Howes. “Sport is about more than performance—it’s about how you treat others, how you lead, and how you take care of yourself.” Drawing from her own experiences as a post-secondary student-athlete, Howes developed sessions on topics such as Leading Through Relationships and Preventing Burnout, emphasizing the importance of identity, self-care, and personal growth beyond sport. She also created an inclusive and supportive environment where athletes were encouraged to build confidence, form connections, and embrace new challenges. In addition to delivering technical training, Howes hosted an open discussion for athletes and their families on pursuing post-secondary basketball, providing valuable insight and guidance for those navigating the recruitment process, particularly in rural communities where access to such information can be limited. The initiative also served a greater purpose, with proceeds supporting Howes’ upcoming volunteer trip to Tanzania, where she will work with women’s shelters to promote education and financial independence. Her commitment to advocacy and community service extends beyond sport and reflects a passion for creating meaningful change. “Erin’s leadership, intentionality, and dedication to service are evident in everything she does,” said Augustana Vikings head coach Marissa Lindquist. “She has created opportunities for others to grow while continuing to lead by example in our program and community.” Following the success of the inaugural camp, Howes plans to expand the initiative into an annual event, continuing to provide opportunities for young female athletes while supporting community-based causes. The CCAA Torchbearer Scholarship, presented by FieldTurf, recognizes student-athletes who exemplify leadership, community involvement, and a commitment to making a meaningful impact beyond sport.

The camp welcomed 30 participants and delivered over 10 hours of on-court training, paired with classroom sessions focused on leadership development and athlete well-being.
