Holland to host 2016 PING CCAA Golf Nationals
June 9, 2015 – The Holland Hurricanes have been approved to host a third National Championship in a timespan of a little over a year and a half.
Holland’s bid to host the 2016 PING CCAA Golf National Championships was accepted by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association today in Fredericton, NB, during the annual general meeting. The event will be held in Charlottetown, PE, Oct. 18-21, 2016.
“The CCAA is a strong national Association and we feel obliged to do our part in promoting student-athlete experiences throughout our country,” said Albert Roche, Athletic Director at Holland College.
“As a staff, we look forward to the challenges of hosting a National Championship and we truly enjoy the energy, excitement and camaraderie that comes with it,” he said.
The tournament will be held at the Fox Meadow Golf Course, site of the 2008 National Championship. Fox Meadow is an engaging championship course that embraces its natural PEI surroundings, and provides golfers with spectacular rural and superb city harbor views.
“Fox Meadow is known for the combination of pristine conditioning, superlative service, for being a fair test of golf and yes red foxes,” said Roche, who also serves as the CCAA’s Golf Convenor.
“The course’s design, construction and location make it a perfect match for late fall golf on Prince Edward Island,” he said.
The course served as an excellent venue in 2008 and Roche believes the student-athlete experience can only be improve upon..
“Prince Edward Island still holds the reputation as Canada’s top golf destination and we welcome the opportunity to showcase the Island to our CCAA friends,” said Roche.
Recently, Holland hosted the 2015 CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship and next March, the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association institution will play host to the nation’s top women’s volleyball teams. Roche and his staff continue to demonstrate that sport has a real and relevant impact on the institution, community and province.
“We believe hosting Nationals encourages enrolments, supports recruitment efforts, illustrates our commitment to the student-athlete experience, assists in developing sport in our province and is a great source of pride for the college,” said Roche.
Last fall in Quebec City, the Hurricanes men’s team captured CCAA gold with a three-shot victory over the Camosun Chargers.
The 2015 PING CCAA Golf National Championships will be hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, BC, Oct. 13-16.
The CCAA is a national sport organization enriching the academic experiences of student-athletes through intercollegiate sport.
