In day one’s Match of the Day we saw an absolute battle from two fierce competitors. In a back and forth match that had the crowd on the edge of their seats. Bhatta would end up winning the match 21-19, 21-23, 24-22
Men’s Singles
Reigning CCAA gold medalist Timothy Lock (Humber College) began his tournament with an unblemished 3-0 record, not dropping a single game, as he outscored opponents 126-40. Second place became a log jam as three players; Arpi Sinha (Fanshawe College), Mono Suttinon (SAIT) and Vaibhav Bhatta (UNB Saint John) all find themselves sitting at 2-0-1. Day two will feature some key matchups that could potentially shape the standings into the medal rounds.
Women’s Singles
Three-time CCAA gold medalist, and recently named CCAA Player of the Year, Ritu Shah (UKC) opened her tournament by going 3-0 in the opening rounds and finds herself in a tie atop the table with Rachel Chan (Humber College). Chan and Shah outscored opponents 252-35 on the day. There’s a three-way tie for third place between Samantha Tran (NAIT), Emma Grabowski (SAIT) and Chincco Lai (Seneca) at 1-0-2. Chan and Shah are set to face off early in the day on Friday in what could be the Match of the Day.
Men’s Doubles
CCAA All-Canadian Bosco Lai and partner Jordan Lau (Seneca) are tied atop the table with Ethan Lee and Matthew Wong (NAIT) at 3-0 after the first day of play. The three way tie for third sees Thao Le and Ty Nyugen (Fanshawe College), Mike Ta and Nathaniel White (MTA) and Raphael Motel and Jonathan Su (CUE) at 1-2.
Women’s Doubles
CCAA All-Canadian Shruti Joshi and her partner Sherry Wu (Humber College) finished day one tied for the top spot in the table with Nana Amnutkkittikul and Arhcelle Ouana (SAIT) at 3-0. The team of Caitlin McCavour and Fiona Hawkes-Purdy (DAL) sit alone in third place after defeating their ACAA counterparts from UKC and Seneca.
Mixed Doubles
CCAA Men’s Player of the Year Mahdi Ahmadi and CCAA All-Canadian Melissa Roque (TKU) find themselves atop the table tied with Jack Ronahan and Catherine Choi (Humber College) after a strong start that saw these two teams outscore their opponents 252-100. The three teams tied for third at 1-0-2 consist of Davis Wong and Mataia Wong (NAIT), David Kim and Tallulah MacNeil (MTA) and Anthony Tso and Alyssa Iran (Seneca). Ahmadi/Roque will face off against Ronahan/Choi Friday during round two.
