Match 1: Canadian Mennonite University Blazers 3 vs. Cégep de l’Outaouais Griffons 1An exciting start to the 2025 championships began, for the Niverville crowd, with the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers taking on the Cégep de l’Outaouais Griffons. Serving errors at the start of the first set kept the score close until the Blazers began to take the lead. Punctuated by a kill from Markus Martens, CMU finished the first set with a win (25-20). The second set saw a similar storyline, despite a strong effort from THe Griffons: close scores – never more than a two point lead between either team – and a CMU win (25-23). Griffons started the third set with a four point lead. The Griffons 12 kills, to CMU’s 7, wins them the third set (25-14), forcing a fourth. The fourth set was a strong fought battle from both sides, but ultimately won by CMU (25-23) sending them to the semi-final. The Griffons will play in the bronze quarter-final. Félix-Antoine Perron was named 4Imprint Player of the Match for Cégep de l’Outaouais Griffons with 21 kills and 3 serving aces.Right side, Duncan Petrie dominated with 14 kills to earn the Blazers Player of the Match. |

Match 2: Douglas College Royals 3 vs. Université Sainte-Anne Dragons 1The Douglas College Royals took a commanding position versus the Université Sainte-Anne Dragons in Day 1’s second quarterfinal matchup. In this west versus east coast game, the Royals’ smart setting and strong offensive force gave them the win in the first set (25-15). The Dragons came back swinging in the second set. Having found a defensive answer to the Royals’ offence, along with 3 service aces, the Dragons took the second set (25-23). The Royals answered with several smart offensive tips and – even with the Dragons’ enthusiastic cheering section – took the third and fourth sets (25-20, 25-12). The Douglas Royals move on to a Day 2 semifinal match versus the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers. The Université Sainte-Anne Dragons will take on Cégep de l’Outaouais Griffons in the bronze quarterfinal. Louis-Philippe Leblanc was named 4Imprint Player of the Match for Université Sainte-Anne Dragons with 11 kills and 11 digs. Tyler Tran’s 9 digs earned him the Douglas Royals Player of the Match. |

Match 3: Red Deer Polytechnic Kings 3 vs. Providence Pilots 0The third quarterfinal of Day 1 featured the host team, the Providence University College Pilots, against the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings. The first set was a close battle, finishing 25-23 in the Kings’ favor, with 11 kills for the Pilots and 13 for the Kings. The Kings controlled the pace of the second set (25-15) with their quick offense, leaving the Pilots unable to keep up. The Pilots fought back in the third set, maintaining a tight score with no more than a two-point deficit. After tying at 9-9, the teams traded points until Providence took a 15-14 lead. However, the Kings’ defense rallied and secured a three-set sweep. The Pilots will compete in the bronze quarterfinal tomorrow at 3:00 pm. The Kings advance to the semifinal at 8:00 pm. Simeon Enns, setter for the Pilots, was named the 4Imprint Player of the Match with 3 digs and 4 blocks. Owen Langberg, with 11 kills, was the Kings’ Player of the Match. |

Match 4: College of the Rockies Avalanche vs. Humber Polytechnic HawksThe final match of Day 1 showcased a sweep by the Humber Polytechnic Hawks of the College of the Rockies Avalanche. From the beginning of the first set, the Hawks led with a strong defensive presence. The Avalanche pushed back throughout the set, but fell to the Hawks 25-23. The second set proved to be a challenge for the initially in-charge Hawks as the Avalanche forced the set into extra points, ending 28-26 in the Hawks’ favour. The Hawks took control early on in the final set, finishing the sweep 25-20. The Avalanche will now meet the Providence Pilots in the 3:00 pm Bronze Medal quarterfinal. The Hawks, now in the semifinal, will face the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings in another 8:00 pm matchup. Reed Grusing earned the 4Imprint Player of the Match for College of the Rockies Avalanche, adding his 12 kills to the team's total of 33. The Humber Hawks’ Player of the Match was awarded to Michael McAlpine with his 9 kills, 4 digs, and 1 ace. |
