2019 MVB: First round matchups

Fanshawe Falcons (A1) vs.
Holland Hurricanes (A4)

Thursday, March 7
MATCH 1: 1 p.m. MT

The Fanshawe Falcons defended their provincial crown with a thrilling five-set victory over the Humber Hawks in the OCAA Championship final. Fanshawe finished atop the OCAA West Division standings with a perfect 22-0 record. The Falcons will be looking to improve on their silver medal at CCAA Nationals last March. They’ll face the Atlantic champion Holland Hurricanes, who upset the St. Thomas Tommies in the ACAA Championship final. The Hurricanes, led by fifth-year outside left Brett Butler, were 8-7 during the regular season but earned their spot at CCAA Nationals with an electrifying four-set victory over the Tommies (12-3) in the ACAA final. 

Keyano Huskies (A2)
vs. Griffons de l’Outaouais (A3)

Thursday, March 7
MATCH 2: 3 p.m. MT

The Keyano Huskies will represent Alberta after a three-set victory over the Lethbridge Kodiaks in the ACAC Championship final. The Huskies, bronze medalists at the 2018 CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship, placed first in the ACAC North Division this season with a 22-2 record. They’ll face the RSEQ Wildcard entry – the Griffons de l’Outaouais, who were defeated in the Quebec final by the defending National Champion Titans de Limoilou. Outaouais (9-7) clinched their spot in Red Deer, AB, with a three-set, semi-final victory over the Volontaires de Sherbrooke (11-5). The Griffons are led by third-year attacker Alexis Tournier.

Titans de Limoilou (B1)
vs. Red Deer Kings (B4)

Thursday, March 7
MATCH 3: 6 p.m. MT

The Titans de Limoilou, reigning CCAA National Champions, defended their crown in Quebec with a straight-set victory over the Griffons de l’Outaouais in the RSEQ Championship final. Limoilou, led by RSEQ Player of the Year Nicolas Fortin, finished atop the standings in Quebec with a 12-4 record. The Titans have advanced to four straight CCAA finals but will have a tough quarter-final test with the host Red Deer Kings. Led by ACAC Player of the Year Regan Fathers, the Kings had a strong second-half and placed second in the ACAC South Division with an 18-6 record. Red Deer, however, was ousted in the conference quarters by the Augustana Vikings.

VIU Mariners (B2)
vs. Humber Hawks (B3)

Thursday, March 7
MATCH 4: 8 p.m. MT

The VIU Mariners captured their first Men’s Volleyball conference title since 2007 with a four-set victory over the four-time defending champion Camosun Chargers in the PACWEST Championship final. VIU placed fourth in the competitive PACWEST with a 16-8 record. The Mariners upset the first-place Douglas Royals (20-4) in the conference semi-finals before knocking of the Chargers. They’ll face the Humber Hawks, the OCAA’s Wildcard entry. Humber fell to division rival Fanshawe in the OCAA Championship final – a five-set thriller. The Hawks finished second in the OCAA West Division with an 18-3 record.
