June 16, 2016 – Canada Basketball's women's high performance program has announced its 2016 women's development team, which features three current student-athletes from the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association.
"We had a great training camp and continue to build on our Canadian style of play," said Fabian McKenzie, head coach. "We're looking forward to competing against top international competition and gaining more international game experience for athletes in our 2017-2020 senior pool."
Three current players from the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) are among the 13 players selected. Mael Gilles of Montreal and Maurane Corbin of St. Bruno, QC, currently suit up for the Nomades de Montmorency. Tamara Farquhar of Pierrefonds, QC, plays for the Dawson Blues.
All three student-athletes will complete in their final year of CCAA play, beginning this fall.
Gilles and Corbin were members of the Nomades squad that captured gold at the2015 CCAA Women's Basketball National Championship in Nanaimo, BC. They also attended CCAA Nationals last March in Windsor, ON.
"The experience these players have received playing in the CCAA has allowed these young athletes to progress at a high level," said Mai-Anh Nguyen, CCAA Women's Basketball Convenor. "They have all equally worked very hard and we congratulate them on achieving such a high level of play and wish them the best of luck."
After a 9-day training camp in Toronto, the squad will now head to Prague for a 5-game exhibition tournament from June 20-25, where they will take on the Czech Republic, Japan and Slovakia.
"Our development program is a key component of our building and maintaining our Gold Medal Profile and continued sustainability of national team athletes," said Denise Dignard, director, women's high performance. "We have a great group of talented players who are committed to representing Canada."
In 2015, the Development team placed 2nd and won a silver medal at the FISU World University Games in South Korea – a best-ever finish for the team.
