March 2, 2016 – For the second consecutive season, Olivia Lei of the Humber Hawks has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Female Badminton Player of the Year.
Lei received the award this evening at the 2016 CCAA Badminton National Championships banquet, hosted by Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, BC.
“Olivia continued to showcase the talent she displayed in 2015 when she won a CCAA National Championship as a freshman,” said David Munro, CCAA VP Sport Development.
In OCAA tournament play, Lei was undefeated in every discipline and she won regionals by an average set score of 21-4. She defended her conference championship and will look to repeat at Nationals in Women’s Singles.
Lei is a complete player and person who practices hard, both with the Hawks and her club team. She leads and mentors teammates and is as sportsmanlike as one can be in the respectful world of badminton. She is a solid student in the classroom who completes the picture of the ideal varsity student-athlete.
Lei also plays in the highest regarded Open tournaments across Canada and medals in almost all of them.
“She is tremendously skillful and also respectful of opponents, making her a model champion,” said Munro. “The CCAA is very proud of her accomplishments.”
